Cat’s Dilemma – Transitivity vs. Intransitivity

چکیده
Received (received date) Revised (revised date) Accepted (accepted date) We study a simple example of a sequential game illustrating problems connected with making rational decisions that are universal for social sciences. The set of chooser's optimal decisions that manifest his preferences in case of a constant strategy of the adversary (the offering player), is investigated. It turns out that the order imposed by the player's rational preferences can be intransitive. The presented quantitative results imply a revision of the " common sense " opinions stating that preferences showing intransitivity are paradoxical and undesired.

Transitivity vs. Intransitivity
We compare two different ways of quantization a simple sequential game Cat’s Dilemma in the context of the debate on intransitive and transitive preferences. This kind of analysis can have essential meaning for the research on the artificial intelligence (some possibilities are discussed). Nature has both properties transitive and intransitive and maybe quantum models can be more able to captur...
متن کاملQuantum Cat’s Dilemma: an example of intransitivity in a quantum game
We study a quantum version of the sequential game illustrating problems connected with making rational decisions. We compare the results that the two models (quantum and classical) yield. In the quantum model intransitivity gains importance significantly. We argue that the quantum model describes our spontaneously shown preferences more precisely than the classical model, as these preferences a...

متن کاملIntransitivity in Theory and in the Real World
This work considers reasons for and implications of discarding the assumption of transitivity—the fundamental postulate in the utility theory of von Neumann and Morgenstern, the adiabatic accessibility principle of Caratheodory and most other theories related to preferences or competition. The examples of intransitivity are drawn from different fields, such as law, biology and economics. This w...
متن کاملTesting for intransitivity of preferences predicted by a lexicographic semi-order
A classic paper by Tversky (Tversky, A. (1969). Intransitivity of preferences. Psychological Review, 76, 31–48.) reported that some people systematically violated transitivity of preference when choosing between specially constructed risky gambles. This conclusion remained controversial because his statistical analysis did not allow each participant to have a different true preference order. Re...
